Explained! Why Ryan Rickelton Over Quinton de Kock as MI Opener Against KKR?

3 min
Ryan Rickelton

The five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians are starting their 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium. MI won the toss and elected to bowl first on a pitch that looked green from the outset.

However, the eyebrows were raised when MI's team sheet didn't have the name of Quinton de Kock in the Playing 11. His countryman, Ryan Rickelton, was instead given a chance to play this game, which came as a surprise.

Why Ryan Rickelton Over Quinton de Kock Against KKR?

Both Rickelton and De Kock are amongst the best wicketkeepers in the world but due to the overseas players rule in IPL, only one of them was expected to play this match. At the toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya announced that Rickelton is playing with De Kock not even in the Impact Players list.

After the toss, some visuals were shown on JioHotstar where De Kock was seen giving his fitness test. Commentator Irfan Pathan guessed on air that it might be Quinton de Kock injury that might have prompted the team management to go ahead with Rickelton for the MI vs KKR IPL match.

Both these wicketkeepers were also a part of South Africa's squad in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup. De Kock opened the batting for the Proteas while Ryan Rickelton batted at No. 3.

Ryan Rickelton Looking to Cement His Place in MI Playing 11

With no Quinton de Kock for this match, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton will be the MI openers 2026 for this match. Rickelton will be hoping to cement his place in MI's team which already has several star-studded players.

Meanwhile, the focus will also be on Rohit Sharma, one of the best batsmen in IPL. Rohit hasn't had a good IPL season over the last few years but looks determined to have an excellent season this time with the bat.

Mumbai's batting line-up looks strong this season with plenty of international stars. The middle order has the likes of Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya, who have been excellent over the years. With Boult and Bumrah in the bowling line-up, they have a much balanced team capable enough of lifting the title.

Coming to the match, Mumbai are the favorites to win start their campaign on a winning note against KKR. The 2020 champions have an excellent record MI vs KKR H2H and will be looking forward to maintain it.
